Each cadet is prepared for college with an individualized program. Qualified, dedicated teachers and small class sizes provide the opportunities and success stories that make the educational experience so necessary and valuable.
Developing future leaders is one of the unique aspects of the experience. Self-discipline, leadership and citizenship are integrated into everyday life for the Corps of Cadets. As cadets rise in rank, they are given increasing levels of responsibilities in supervising, leading, and training fellow cadets.
Physical fitness matches the development of the cadet's mind and all cadets participate in sports throughout the school year. The academy has varsity and intramural teams competing in a variety of sports. One of the requirements for acceptance into a service academy is to receive a congressional nomination. As a member of the United States Congress, it is my honor and privilege to nominate qualified candidates who meet the physical and academic requirements and desire to serve our country to the United States Military Academy. My father is a WWII veteran. I have great respect for the young men and women who are willing to stand up and take an oath to defend our country. We have assembled an outstanding Academy Evaluation Committee, and nomination decisions are very carefully weighed. I can nominate up to ten people for each academy vacancy allotted to our district.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five US service academies: US Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; US Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; US Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. Fifth Service Academy, US Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, Appointment does not require congressional nomination.
Your first priority is to contact your chosen academy and request a pre-candidacy application. To be eligible for nomination to one of the four academies, you must be a citizen of the United States; A resident of the Third District of Tennessee; between the ages of 17 and 23 (25 for Merchant Marine Academy); and single with no dependents.
You can begin the nomination process as early as the spring of your junior year of high school. Once you notify the admissions office of the academy of your interest, service academy officials will compile a candidate file to keep track of your application. Attending any military academy will provide you with excellent education, training, and leadership experience that will serve you well as you begin your career as a military officer. You need to serve five years of active duty to graduate from the service academy.
Acceptance for admission is highly competitive. You can apply to more than one academy to increase your chances of admission.
